Load size is the starting point, and it is about volume
Junk fills space before it gets heavy. That is the thing most people get the wrong way round when they try to estimate a job themselves. What is in the load
Most residential bookings fall into these groups, and a typical clear-out mixes several:
- Furniture. Lounges, bed bases, wardrobes, dining settings and outdoor furniture. Bulky, often awkward through a doorway, and frequently the whole reason for the booking.
- Whitegoods. Fridges, freezers, washers and dryers. Heavy, usually a two person lift, and headed for metal and appliance recovery rather than general waste.
- Garden waste. Prunings, turf, pots and old timber from a garden bed. Light per item, enormous by volume, and accepted at green waste facilities that will not take it mixed with household rubbish.
- Mixed household. The garage, the spare room, the shed. Boxes, toys, luggage, small appliances and things nobody has opened in years. This is where sorting takes the most time.
- Electronics. Televisions, monitors, computers and cables, which go to an e-waste recycler under separate rules to everything else on the truck.

A load is rarely one destination. Usable furniture and household goods are offered to charity first, metal and appliances go to recovery, electronics go to e-waste, green material goes to a green waste site, and whatever is genuinely finished goes to a licensed transfer station. A full clear-out is a different shape of job. Rooms have to be worked through in order, decisions get made on the spot about what is kept, sorting happens as items come out, and the volume can pass what one vehicle holds. Deceased estates and end of lease clean ups often land here. The upside is that clearing everything in one visit is better value than paying for four separate small pickups, because the travel and the drop offs are shared across the whole load.

Does one item cost less to remove than a full clear-out?
Yes. A single item pickup uses a small part of a vehicle, needs one lift and usually has one destination, so it sits at the bottom of the scale. A full clear-out fills much more space, needs a hauler team working room by room, and is split across several facilities. Both are quoted on the same basis, which is the space the load occupies plus the labour and drop offs it requires.
Do fridges and washing machines change the price?
They can, for two reasons. Whitegoods are heavy and generally need two people to move safely, especially from a laundry or a second storey, and they go to appliance and metal recovery rather than into a general load. Is garden waste quoted differently to household junk?
It is handled differently, which affects the quote. Green material such as prunings, turf and soil is accepted at green waste facilities that will not take it once it is mixed with general rubbish, so it usually travels as its own portion of the load. Garden waste is also light but very bulky, so it fills vehicle space quickly. Keeping green material in one pile, separate from household items, makes the job faster and the quote more accurate.
Do I need to sort or move the junk before pickup?

Two things do help: separating garden waste from household items, and keeping restricted material such as paint, chemicals, gas bottles and car batteries out of the pile, since those cannot be carried.
