Four choices decide how easily a move can be booked: the day, the week, the hour and the season. Each is set out against availability and price.

What actually drives demand
Leases end together
Residential leases mostly finish on the last days of a month, and more again at the end of a quarter. Everyone then wants the same three dates.
The morning does more
An early load happens while it is cool and the streets are clear. A late one pushes the unload into the evening, in the dark.
Winter is the quiet season
Fewer households move when it is cold and wet, so the diary stays open and you get the window you asked for.
Four decisions, in order
Take them in order of leverage. The week of the month matters most, then the day, then the hour. Season matters least, because few can choose it.

Day of the week
Weekends are the default, which is exactly why they are hardest to get.

This is the lever nobody thinks about, and the most useful thing here.

Time of day
A move that starts early finishes in daylight. That is most of the value in a morning slot.

Season, and the local notes
Season is the choice most people never get, so plan around it instead.

The easiest date to get
- A Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday morning
- The second week of the month, not the last
- Outside school holidays, and outside summer
If the date is fixed: most are, by a lease or a settlement. Book as far ahead as you can and send the access detail early, because that part is yours to control.
School holidays cut both ways: the roads are quieter and you are not at work, but families move in the same fortnight and crews fill up.
Summer near the water: beach parking thins from mid morning, so an early start earns more in summer than in any other season.

Timing questions
Which day is hardest to book?
Saturday, and a Saturday in the last week of a month above any other date. Midweek mornings are the opposite, often free at a few days' notice.
The cause is the shape of the week, not the price. A move needs someone answerable at both addresses, most people can only spare a Saturday, and the diary fills outwards from there. Choose a Wednesday and you get the pick of the start times too, which matters more on a house with stairs.
Is the end of the month really busier?
Yes, and it is the steadiest pattern in the trade. Lease ends and settlements land on the same handful of dates, so the diary tightens from the third week onwards.
Plan around it two ways. If the date is yours to choose, take the second week and you get the window you asked for. If a lease fixes it, book as soon as the paperwork is signed, because crews are committed early on those dates.
How far ahead should I lock a date?
The moment the lease or the settlement is certain. A midweek move in a quiet week can often be booked in days. A month-end weekend rarely can.
If the date is still moving, describe the job anyway and confirm the day later. Sizing a crew needs the rooms and the access at both ends, and neither changes because the date slides a week. Sending it early flags the awkward pieces too, so nobody meets an unmovable wardrobe on the morning.
Do school holidays help or hurt?
Both, and which wins depends on whether there are children in the house. Roads are quieter and you are more likely to be free, but families all move in the same fortnight.
The effect lands on the window, not the day. Morning slots go first across a holiday fortnight, so what is left is a midday start on a home that wants a full day. Take the first week of the break over the second, and a weekday inside it over a weekend.
Does moving in winter have a downside?
Weather, and little else. Rain slows ramps, paths and timber stairs, and a carton will not sit on wet ground while a truck is being loaded.
Plan for it, not against it. Put old towels or a runner inside both doors, keep one room clear as a dry landing area, and expect more of the load to be blanketed than in dry weather. Daylight is the other limit, and it is the argument for the earliest start on offer.
